Reviewing Products Honestly When You Earn a Cut

·7 min read·GoScript Team /Craft

An honest product review puts the viewer first even when you earn a cut. Show the flaws, say who the product is not for, and recommend it only when it truly helps. Trust drives the sale, and trust only survives if the review is real.

Affiliate money changes what you earn, not what is true. The moment you hide a defect to protect a commission, the review becomes an ad and viewers can tell. Honesty is the strategy, not a moral add-on.

Show the rough edges

Name the one thing that annoyed you. Maybe the app crashes, the battery drains fast, or the setup takes an hour. A single honest flaw makes everything else you praise believable. Flawless reviews read as paid copy.

Go further and name who should skip it. If the product is overkill for beginners or too basic for pros, say so. Turning away the wrong buyer builds trust with the right one, and the right one is who actually buys.

A review with no flaws is not a review. It is an ad.

Test before you recommend

  • Use the product for at least a week before you record, not just an hour.
  • Try the feature you plan to praise the most, and expect it to disappoint somewhere.
  • Compare it to the alternative your viewers already own or consider.
  • Keep your own notes so your opinion stays steady across videos.
  • Update the review if the product changes or breaks later.

Separate the review from the pitch

Do the review first, as if no money were involved. Then, at the end or in the description, add the link. Viewers forgive a link after a fair review. They do not forgive a fair review squeezed into thirty seconds of ad copy.

If a sponsor or program pressures you to hide a flaw, that is your answer to whether to work with them. A partner who wants a fake review is buying short-term sales with your reputation. Decline and keep the audience.

When the product is bad

If the product is bad, say so and do not link it. You lose one commission and keep the trust that brings the next ten. Nobody remembers the sale you skipped, but everyone remembers the product you pushed that failed them.

You can still make a useful video about a bad product. Explain who it is wrong for and what to buy instead. Honest warnings earn clicks and goodwill, and the good alternative you link still pays you.

Over time, viewers learn that your recommendations carry weight because you say no often. That reputation is worth more than any single commission, and it is the one thing a competitor cannot copy.

Key takeaways

  • Lead with honesty, not the commission, or the review becomes an ad.
  • Name at least one flaw and the type of buyer who should skip the product.
  • Use the product for a week before you record a recommendation.
  • If the product is bad, skip the link and keep the trust.
