How to Edit AI Drafts Without Losing Your Voice

·8 min read·GoScript Team /Product

A draft can be grammatically clean, correctly structured, and completely dead on the tongue. That is the risk with AI output. It commits no errors and takes no risks, and a script with no risk is a script nobody remembers.

Editing is where you get your voice back. You are not rewriting from scratch, just doing surgery on the sentences that sound like a brochure, then adding the texture only you can provide.

If you would not say a sentence out loud to a friend, do not let it survive the edit just because it is accurate.

Start with what you would never say

Read the draft and highlight every phrase that feels borrowed. Words like leverage, optimize, and journey are usually a sign the model filled space. You do not have to replace them all, but each one you kill makes the script sound more like a person.

Pay special attention to openings and transitions. Models love to start with a housekeeping sentence and connect ideas with logical glue. Real speakers just start talking and trust the listener to follow.

Moves that restore a voice

  • Shorten a long sentence into two, because real speech breathes in short bursts.
  • Swap an abstract noun for a concrete detail from your own experience.
  • Delete the transition words and let the ideas sit next to each other.
  • Add one opinion the model refused to take, since opinions are what make writing sound human.

Keep a swipe file of your own lines

Save the lines from your past scripts that landed. Not the whole scripts, just the sentences that felt most like you: a joke, a blunt take, an image you invented. Over time that file becomes a voice reference you can paste into any prompt.

You can also hand the tool a few of those lines and ask it to match the rhythm for a new section. It will not nail your voice, but it will land closer than a cold start, and that saves editing time on every draft after.

Editing order matters

Fix the ideas before the words. If a section argues something weak, polishing the prose is a waste. Read for structure first, cut or reorder the beats, and only then start working sentence by sentence.

Once the structure holds, do one pass for clarity, one for length, and a final pass out loud. Doing all of it at once means you fix the easy punctuation and miss the paragraph that should not exist at all.

Key takeaways

  • Treat editing as surgery, not a rewrite, and target the sentences that sound borrowed.
  • Kill the abstract filler words that models use to pad space.
  • Keep a swipe file of your best original lines to reuse as voice references.
  • Fix structure before grammar, then finish with an out loud read.

Turn this into your next script.
