Staying Out Of Spam As A Creator

·7 min read·GoScript Team /Research

Staying out of spam starts with permission. If someone asked to get your emails, they are far more likely to open them and far less likely to mark them as spam. That alone carries a lot of weight.

Beyond permission, a few plain habits help inbox providers see your messages as wanted. You do not need to be a technical expert to follow most of them.

Only email people who opted in

Never add emails from comments, forms you did not control, or bought lists. Even if well meant, those contacts did not ask for your messages. They are likely to ignore or report them.

Use a clear opt-in. A single checkbox that says what they will get is enough. Avoid pre-checked boxes, as they can cause issues and hurt trust.

Be clear about who you are

Use your own name or channel name in the 'from' field. Make the reply-to address one you actually check. People should know at a glance who sent the message.

Also set a clear subject and use plain text where it fits. Overly salesy wording or strange characters can raise flags without helping your readers.

If a reader cannot tell who you are and why they got the email, they may hit spam.

Make it easy to leave

Include a clear unsubscribe link in every email. It should be easy to find and should work without logging in. This is not just polite, but expected by inbox providers.

When someone unsubscribes, remove them right away. Do not ask for a reason on the way out unless you must. Keep that step as simple as possible.

Key takeaways

  • Only email people who clearly opted in to receive your messages.
  • Use a recognizable 'from' name and a real reply-to address you check.
  • Send the content you promised at the pace you promised when they joined.
  • Include an easy, working unsubscribe link in every email.
  • Remove unsubscribers right away and never use bought or scraped lists.
