Using Reels to Reach New People on Instagram Growth

·7 min read·GoScript Team /Research

If you want Instagram growth, post Reels. That is the short answer, and it still holds: Reels are the only format Instagram regularly shows to accounts that do not follow you yet.

The longer answer is that reach alone does nothing if the clip fails to earn a follow. So the goal is Reels that travel and then convince.

Why Reels outperform every other format

Feed posts and carousels mostly circulate among your existing audience. Reels get placed into the Reels tab and Explore, where the viewer has never heard of you. That is a discovery engine, not a retention tool.

Instagram has said repeatedly that it wants original short video, and the distribution numbers back that up. On most accounts, a mid-quality Reel beats a polished feed post by a wide margin on reach.

Open with motion, not a logo

The first second decides everything. Start on the most interesting frame of the clip, the loud part, the visual punchline, the finished result. Do not build up to it.

A creator we studied cut the first three seconds off each Reel and replayed them at the end instead. Watch-through went up, and so did follow rate, because people stayed long enough to hear the point.

Hook with text on screen

  • Put the claim in the first frame as an on-screen caption, so muted viewers still get it
  • Keep it under eight words, one line if you can
  • Change the text every two to three seconds to reward continued watching
  • End with a loop back to the opening line when the topic allows it

A Reel is a billboard, not a documentary. You are borrowing eight seconds, so spend them on one idea.

Post enough to learn

Three Reels a week for eight weeks will teach you more than three months of careful one-offs. You need volume to see what your specific audience responds to, because generic advice only gets you in the door.

Keep a simple note of which hooks outperformed. Patterns show up faster than you expect, and once they do, you can repeat the structure with new topics instead of guessing each time.

Key takeaways

  • Reels are the primary discovery format on Instagram for non-followers
  • Open on the strongest frame and add on-screen text in the first second
  • Watch-through and saves matter more than raw views
  • Publish consistently for two months before judging results
