Running a Paid Newsletter Next to Your Videos

·8 min read·GoScript Team /Craft

A paid newsletter lets your best research earn money without another edit. People already pay for writing that saves them time, and a weekly issue costs less to produce than a video. The catch is that a newsletter is a promise, and skipping weeks burns the trust that makes it worth paying for.

Find the recurring angle

A paid newsletter needs a reason to show up every week. That reason is usually a beat: one topic you follow closely and update often. If your videos cover camera gear, the newsletter tracks prices, releases, and how tools perform in real use. The topic should be narrow enough that you never run dry and broad enough to stay interesting.

Free posts build the list. Paid posts reward the people who stay. The free half should be genuinely useful, not a teaser that withholds the answer. If the free issue already helps, readers believe the paid one will too.

Pick a rhythm you can keep

Weekly is the standard, but only if you can hold it during a busy month. Some writers do better with twice a month and a longer piece. Choose the pace that survives your worst week, then never miss it. Consistency, even at a slower beat, beats a burst that fades.

Batch two issues when you have a quiet stretch. Store them as buffer so a bad week does not break the streak. A short note that you are still here keeps churn low even when the topic is light.

Readers do not pay for length. They pay for the feeling that you read everything so they do not have to.

Make the paid tier worth it

The paid side needs a perk the free side cannot get by waiting. Extra research, a deeper breakdown, or answers to reader questions all work. The value has to feel concrete enough that a person can explain it to a friend in one sentence.

  • One deeper piece per week or month
  • Access to an archive of past issues
  • A question slot for paying readers
  • Occasional files or data behind the research

Grow without chasing numbers

Do not buy a list or chase viral posts. Grow from your videos, where people already like your thinking. Mention the newsletter once per video, keep the signup simple, and let time do the work. A list of two thousand engaged readers will out-earn a list of fifty thousand who never open an email.
