Disclosure Rules For YouTube Affiliate Creators

·7 min read·GoScript Team /Craft

Disclosure is a rule, not a mood

If you earn money from a link or a tag, you have to say so. Disclosure rules exist to keep viewers from mistaking an ad for advice, and platforms and regulators expect a clear signal.

The disclosure has to be obvious. A buried line at the bottom of a description does not count as clear in most jurisdictions.

Where the disclosure belongs

Put a spoken mention in the video when the product first appears. A single sentence is enough, for example that you earn a commission if someone buys through the link.

Add a written note in the description near the links. Keep the wording plain so a viewer skimming on a phone still catches it.

Use the built in paid promotion checkbox when a brand pays you directly or gives you a product for free with conditions attached.

The forms of disclosure

  • A spoken line near the first product mention
  • A written line at the top of the description
  • The paid promotion checkbox for sponsored deals
  • A tag on social posts that carry affiliate links
  • A note in the pinned comment when links change

Common disclosure mistakes

The most common mistake is using vague words like collaboration and hoping viewers fill in the rest. Say the word commission or sponsored and be done with it.

Another mistake is disclosing once for a channel that posts many links. Each video needs its own disclosure because viewers rarely watch in order.

Some creators hide the note in lowercase at the very bottom of a long description. That fails the spirit of the rule and the letter of it in several countries.

Disclosure is not a punishment for selling. It is the thing that lets you sell for years without your audience feeling tricked.

When rules differ by country

Rules vary. Some places expect a specific word, some expect the note above the fold, and some expect it before a viewer clicks anything.

When you are unsure, disclose more clearly rather than less. Over disclosing rarely costs you a sale, and under disclosing can cost you a channel.

Keep a saved template for your disclosure lines. Copying a clear sentence into every video is faster than rewriting it and forgetting a key detail.

Key takeaways

  • Disclose any affiliate or sponsored arrangement clearly
  • Use the words commission or sponsored instead of vague phrases
  • Disclose in each video and each post, not once for the whole channel
  • Add the paid promotion checkbox when a brand pays or gifts with conditions
  • When unsure, disclose more plainly, not less
