Ordering Your Points for Retention, Not Logic

·7 min read·GoScript Team /Editorial

Order your video outline points by curiosity rather than by logic. Logical order is how the topic is built. Curiosity order is how a viewer wants to receive it, and those two sequences are rarely the same.

I learned this after noticing that my most logical scripts had the worst drop off. The clearest explanation bored people because it front loaded setup. The moment I moved the interesting part earlier, retention climbed.

The best point is wasted if it arrives after the viewer has already left.

Why logic order loses people

Logic says define your terms, then build up. Viewers do not arrive wanting definitions. They arrive with a question and want the interesting part quickly. If your outline saves the payoff for the end, you are asking for patience you have not earned.

This is not an argument for chaos. The video still needs a shape. It just needs the shape to serve attention first and tidy explanation second. You can always fold the definitions in after the hook has done its job.

A simple reordering pass

Write every point on its own line, then ask which one a stranger would want to hear first. Move that to the top. Then ask which point makes the viewer want the next one, and chain from there.

Sometimes the honest answer is that your best point belongs somewhere in the middle as a payoff. That is fine. The rule is not to put the strongest idea first at any cost. It is to order by pull instead of by tidiness.

Signals you ordered it wrong

  • The outline reads like a table of contents instead of a story.
  • Your most exciting point is buried in the last third.
  • Each section explains itself before it earns the explanation.
  • You feel the need to warn viewers to stay until the end.

When to break your own order

Curiosity order is a default, not a law. Some topics genuinely need background before the interesting part makes sense, and burying the setup would confuse more than it hooks. Know the difference between setup the viewer needs and setup that only flatters the topic.

A useful test is to film the strong version first. If the video still works without the opening explanation, the setup was optional. If it collapses, the setup belongs earlier.

Key takeaways

  • Order points by curiosity, not by how the topic is structured.
  • Put the strongest pull early and chain momentum from there.
  • Fold definitions in after the hook has earned attention.
  • If it reads like a table of contents, reorder it.
